The Port of Algeciras has closed the first month of 2024 moving 9 million tons of goods, a 3.3% increase from last year. The growth has been driven by Liquid Bulk, which closed January with 2.8 million tons of products loaded and unloaded in the Bay terminals, a 17.2% increase. Solid Bulk, although with a much smaller volume, 42,903 tons, also grew by 35.5%.

In the detailed analysis of the traffic, the supply of fuel to ships stands out with a growth of over 20% in general and 37% for operations at anchor, as a result of the new routes chosen by shipping companies to avoid transiting the Red Sea. Thus, of the more than 600 ships that took fuel in January at the Port of Algeciras, almost half of them did so while anchored.

Container Traffic has remained at similar levels to the first month of last year, with 372,023 teus moved in the container terminals, a 1.5% decrease.

As for the traffic in the Strait, January has been a positive month, with the embarkation of almost 361,000 passengers (+14.4%) and 81,000 passenger vehicles (+21.4%) on the Algeciras-Ceuta, Algeciras-Tangier Med, and Tarifa-Tangier City lines. In the case of ro-ro traffic, there is an 8.6% growth with 43,453 trucks, of which 40,779 units chose the Algeciras-Tangier Med line.
