The Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía (BFA), part of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, has entered a new era under the artistic direction of Granada-born choreographer and dancer Patricia Guerrero. The official presentation of the ensemble that will bring the company’s new projects to the stage has taken place today, featuring nine dancers and five musicians.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Arturo Bernal, emphasized that «the Ballet Flamenco is an institution that represents Andalusia worldwide. It is the best ambassador we have for flamenco, our culture, and our Andalusian identity» since its founding 30 years ago. He highlighted the importance of having a public dance company, «a space that allows our artists to develop their talent and project it from Andalusia to the world.» Bernal praised the new members of the company, led by Guerrero, expressing his confidence that they will have «three exciting years ahead to develop an artistic project, during which all members of this Ballet will grow professionally.»
Patricia Guerrero, expressed her «excitement» to start this new phase and her desire to work on a project that she hopes «will have great impact.» The company is already preparing ‘Pineda,’ the show that will debut next summer in Granada, featuring an ensemble that shares «a passion for dance and flamenco.»
Guerrero’s artistic project as a candidate for the direction of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía includes the flamenco suite ‘Tierra Bendita.’ This project will be developed following the presentation of ‘Pineda’ and will be featured in the ‘Lorca and Granada in the Gardens of the Generalife’ series. The suite will be a journey through the most representative flamenco songs and dances, merging tradition and modernity.
The selected ensemble for these projects participated in auditions with a high number of applicants, showcasing extraordinary talent. The Ballet Flamenco of Andalucía has been a key ambassador for flamenco worldwide since its inception in 1994, performing on stages across the globe and participating in international events and festivals. With more than 1600 performances on five continents, the company has brought its productions to remote locations while also remaining a prominent part of the Andalusian cultural agenda. This is an exciting new phase for the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, with Patricia Guerrero at the helm, and a talented ensemble ready to elevate the company to new heights.
